This tutorial comes to us from BBThemes which was posted over at crackberry.com. I asked if I can showcase his quick tutorial on the Lab’s website and with no pause he said, “go for it.” So, I bring you a quick way to downsize your themes overall filesize. Use the link below to discuss this with us if you have any further questions!

Take an image you made, for example a signal meter, wifi meter, or even icons. Follow the steps below to make them much … much … smaller!

  • Create a new project in composer
  • Go to File > Import and locate and import your image. Repeat  this as many time as you need. Import all backgrounds, icons, etc, this way.
  • Go to File > Export > Svg and export to a new folder.
  • Browse to that folder on your pc and you will find a folder named ‘images’. Inside that folder are all your images you just exported.

Go back to the image you had before you imported it into Composer. Click it on and look at the file size of that image. You will be amazed at how large it is. Do this for the new image files you created in Composer. The file size is much smaller. Use the newly created images instead of the other ones and you should find your theme running smoother than before!

Note from the Lab

BBThemes claims this will not work for every image. If you have Photoshop you can take a .JPG open it and re-save it using less quality. If you find that Composer is not making every images file size smaller, then I would open them up in Photoshop (maybe even Gimp) and re-save them  - this time lowering the quality of the image buy a few points.
