People need information quickly and clearly. Lock icon is one of those "clear and quick to understand" icons, but then again, after so much time spent on that new wallpaper and fancy SVG animations (and all-nighter coding effort), are you really going to go with this?
this standard, boring, everyone-has-it lock icon?
Surely you can do more. For example, it doesn't have to be transparent:

And it doesn't have to be a boring lock picture too! A picture of someone (or something, maybe an alien? Or a LoLCAT?) will make it livelier and more unique than a standard lock.
Of course, you need to let them know it's about "your device is locked", so put something informative, like that "locked" text balloon I use there, or maybe a small lock picture. Just make sure it's readable/visible enough to dish out the information neded, but small enough to share the focus with your picture!
You may think using text on such a small space is a bad decision, but it's not. For example, try out that icon I use (it might be too girly for your taste, but it's just for demonstration) and take a look at it on your 480x360 device. It's readable enough, the font is even bigger than lowercaps letters in default BB Alpha Sans size
However, do note that the largest space available is 80x80. it is quite big for something good, but not big enough for something too fancy. Oftentimes you need to scale down a nice picture to fit in it to the point it's not as good as in its original size.
I also want to point out that smaller space means smaller screen size, so while you may think 46x46 is inferior to 80x80, when seen in the device it's intended to the size is roughly the same, thanks to smaller dpi
For example, this 60x60 icon can be used for smaller than 480x360 devices without many issues:
